The Obelisco de Buenos Aires (Obelisk of Buenos Aires) is a national historic monument and icon of Buenos Aires. Situated in the Plaza de la República in the intersection of avenues Corrientes and 9 de Julio, it was created in 1936 to commemorate the quadricentennial of the first foundation of the city.

El monumento en sí fue erigido en 1936 para conmemorar el cuarto centenario de la primera fundación de Buenos Aires por Pedro de Mendoza en 1536, y marca el lugar donde se izó la bandera nacional argentina en la ciudad por primera vez.

The city of Buenos Aires was originated twice. It was first founded in 1536 by an voyage led by the Spaniard Pedro de Mendoza, who called it Nuestra Señora Santa María del Buen Aire (“Our Lady St. Mary of the Good Air”). He was completed the first governor-general of the Río de la Plata region.
